GE Lunar's established performance and reliability standards for AP spine, and Total Body assessments are met in the Forearm Software package. The optional software determines the bone mineral density (BMD) in the distal forearm.

AP Spine
The AP Spine is an ideal site for measuring a patient's bone mineral density. This is due to the fact that it is a weight bearing area and is prone to osteoporotic fractures. The spine's high concentration of metabolically active trabecular (soft, spongy) bone makes it the most sensitive site for monitoring response to therapy.

Total Body
Osteoporosis is increasingly recognized as a disease associated with many conditions besides natural aging and post-menopausal estrogen deficiency. Numerous other groups are affected by secondary conditions and related treatments that adversely impact bone metabolism as well as body composition. There is also increased awareness that the genesis of osteoporosis begins in childhood where environmental and/or clinical conditions can impede the development of peak bone mass.
The total body measurement is the fastest growing DEXA procedure due to its unique ability to assess a variety of

metabolic disorders and their potential impact on skeletal status and total body composition.

Forearm
GE Lunar's established performance and reliability standards for AP spine, DualFemurª, and Total Body assessments are met in the Forearm Software package. GE Lunar's optional software determines the bone mineral density (BMD) in the distal forearm. The forearm is an ideal site that can show the effects of primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism. The latter is common among the elderly, and in patients with renal disease or malabsorption.
